The Mat-Su Construction Academy introduces adults, 18 and older, to construction trades. Follow these directions to apply for FREE training. Acceptance is on a competitive basis.

The following steps must be completed prior to scheduling an interview:

 1. Each applicant must complete the Construction Academy Application. This form is available at the Mat-Su Job Center. This form can also be mailed, e-mailed, or faxed to you. You can also access a printable application by clicking here.

2. Each applicant must obtain their Career Readiness Certificate. You will be tested in the following areas: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information. Testing sessions are offered at your local Job Center. At the Mat-Su Job Center, free testing is provided three times a week, and the times/days are as follows:

  • Thursday at 8:00 am
  • Thursday at 12:00 pm (noon)
  • Fridays at 8:00 am

The testing generally takes about 3.5 hours. You can call the Mat-Su Job Center at 352-2500 to schedule your test at any time.

Preceding your CRC testing, we strongly suggest that you be enrolled in Career Ready 101, which is a web-based program on which you can study for each of the above stated tests. Currently we are offering this testing at no charge; however, if you do not test at your desired level, subsequent tests will be subject to a fee.

3. Each applicant must submit a resume and two letters of recommendation (from teachers, employers, coaches, etc.). The resume is required, but the letters of recommendation are not, although they are very helpful in the selection process and have often in the past been the deciding factor on whether or not an applicant is eligible to participate in this program.

All individuals submitting complete applications (this includes the application form, your updated resume, and a CRC at the level of at least a 4) will be offered a 20 minute interview for class placement. Class sizes are limited and interviews do not mean you have been selected.

After the interview, all applicants will be required to submit to pre-enrollment drug testing. A copy of the Alaska Construction Academy Drug and Alcohol Policy and Procedures Manual will be distributed to each student, who will be required to sign a statement acknowledging receipt and agreeing to comply with the policy.
